KAMILĖ GALLERY is pleased to present OCEAN, a solo exhibition of new works by Ian Daniell. The show is a joyous celebration of marine life and an ode to encounters in the wild. Western Australia’s iconic ocean fauna are rendered in brilliant colour, definitive form and at life-size 1:1 scale.
Monumental snapshots of momentary magic are captured and distilled; the dorsal fin of a killer whale rising six feet above the waves, the world’s largest shark mesmerising its viewers with patterns as it passes. The large scale works are a reminder of real world wonder, beauty and awe, which highlights a stark contrast to society’s ubiquitous viewing of these creatures as small images on screens.
Each glistening painting presents cherished marine icons with great care and consideration. The emblematic mode, a nod to the linear illustrations of Australian animals displayed on road signs, is a reminder that the future existence of each subject hangs in the balance. The colours each creature is depicted in retain a level of accuracy, whilst those that contrast and surround are pure exuberance. A super high gloss surface finishes these paintings, at once reminiscent of water and the shiny surfaces of luxury goods. These creatures in the wild are precious rarities, which these works call for us to protect and treasure.
